Jaffer top-scored with a run-a-ball 143 and Mukund continued his amazing run of form with 114 as Red put up a mammoth total of 351 for 2. After Tanmay Srivastava and Srikkanth Anirudha added a century opening stand in good time, Red meandered without much purpose and ended up with 263 for 9.
After Blue opted to bat, Mukund and Jaffer played out the first four overs quietly. In the fifth, bowled by Vikramjeet Malik, they took 18 and increased the rate from there on. Dhawal Kulkarni, who began very tidily, should have had Jaffer on 28 but dropped an easy return catch during a maiden ninth over. Kulkarni lost his line hereon and Jaffer went on to cross his half-century off off 59 balls. Mukund's half-century came up off 71 balls.
The pair batted very well in tandem, taking smart singles and rotating the strike. They maintained a constant run-rate and eased past the 200 mark in the 34th over just after Mukund was put down by Suresh Raina on 80.
When Mukund fell at the end of the 41st over, MS Dhoni strode out and hit a breezy unbeaten 34 from 25 balls, while Yusuf Pathan biffed 34 from 18 to further deflate the attack. Malik, who opened the attack for Green, bore the brunt of the powerful Red batting. His first three overs cost 32, his fourth went for 11, and when he came back for a third spell after 42 overs Dhoni and Pathan took him apart. Malik had the most expensive figures of the innings (7-0-81-0), and none of the overs bowlers, apart from Anirudha, went for less than 5.60.
The chase lost steam after the first 15 overs, at which time Red were 96 for 0. Until here Anirudha led the scoring with 56 from 44 balls, but Harbhajan Singh got him to drag one on soon after. Harbhajan and Yusuf Pathan tied down proceedings well and Srivastava shut shop and appeared content to play out the overs. He was sixth out at 237 for a 133-ball 100, after which Red went on to finish on 263 for 9. The fate of England's Test tour to India lies in the hands of the players themselves, according to their captain, Kevin Pietersen, as the team prepares to fly home from the country in the wake of the terrorist atrocities that have rocked Mumbai over the past two days.
Officials from both England and India are adamant that the Test series will go ahead, particularly after the BCCI agreed to shift the second Test from Mumbai to Chennai on a request from the ECB. But according to Pietersen, the situation is not so cut-and-dried. If his team-mates have reservations about taking part, he will not be forcing them to re-join the tour.
"We need to make sure the security's right - but if it's not safe then we won't be coming back," Pietersen told Sky Sports. "People are their own people, I'll never force anyone to do anything or tell them to do anything against their will. On the field I may ask people to do things in a certain way but people run their own lives. We'll have to see how the security is."
Despite the postponement of the final two ODI fixtures in Guwahati and Delhi, England are still scheduled to take part in a planned warm-up match in Baroda on December 5-7, which effectively means that the players will have no more than five days to reach a concensus and return to the country. However, a senior BCCI official admitted that the Indian board is aware that the fate of the series now lies in the hands of the England players.
"Both the boards are in complete agreement on going ahead with the Test series," the official told Cricinfo. "But it seems the stand adopted by the England players will be crucial. At this point, I doubt whether even the ECB can confirm what their [players] position will be. The next few days will be important, but that issue is for the ECB to resolve. As far as the BCCI is concerned, there are absolutely no doubts about the Test series."
"We're going to London to re-evaluate the situation but the Test series is still in place," Hugh Morris, ECB managing director, said as England left Bhubaneswar for Bangalore to catch a connecting flight to London. "This is a tragic event and the players feel desperately sorry for all that are caught up in the events in Mumbai. They're very disturbed by it as we all are.
"To get back to a home environment will be a good thing," said Morris. "It's been an awful tragedy that this has happened in Mumbai and the players have felt very close to it because they have been in the hotel and in the rooms and the restaurant only a couple of weeks ago and getting back home for a few days will serve them well."
Sean Morris, the PCA chief executive, said any decision would be based on reports from the players' security advisors. "They will look at it in the cold light of day and ask, is it safe to return or not?" he was quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph. "They will go with that advice assuming the situation in India does not deteriorate further. The players have full faith in Reg Dickason [England team security officer] and will be guided by him."
The content of that report will be eagerly awaited. A spokesman for AKE Group, a leading UK-based security firm, told Cricinfo that the level of risk faced by the England team "should not be overstated". He did, however, concede that the high-profile nature of the team, coupled with the fact that their itinerary is widely publicised, could be a justifiable cause for concern. "India is not Iraq, it is not a naturally hostile environment," said the spokesman. "But Britain is a front runner in the war on terror, and therefore an attack on one of their sporting teams would be high political capital, and a fair strike, so to speak."
In the opinion of Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, there is little chance of England feeling safe enough to return to India in the foreseeable future. Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Vaughan - who has been in Bangalore with the England performance squad - told how he might well have been staying in the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai on the night of the attacks, had it not been for a late change of itinerary. He underlined the proximity of the attacks by pointing out that England's white kit for the Test series is all being stored in a room at the hotel, which was partially gutted by fire on Thursday morning.
"It's getting closer," Vaughan wrote. "I remember watching on TV a few weeks ago as the lorry-full of bombs went off at the Marriott hotel in Islamabad, where England were due to stay for the Champions Trophy, and thinking crikey, it's getting close. Now it's Mumbai, where the Middlesex players were due to stay on Thursday night. There seem to be these triggers, or warnings, that it is getting closer to cricket.
"I didn't think we were under threat in Bangalore," Vaughan continued, "and history to date says cricketers are safe. But our security man said we couldn't go in our England kit to the hotel where we eat 60 yards across the road from the stadium, and we'd have to go in cars, we couldn't walk. We were told we couldn't go to any of the hotels in Bangalore that westerners use."
Another former England captain, who preferred not to be named, told Cricinfo that he believed that the Test series would have to be postponed in the wake of the atrocities, although he predicted a tricky round of negotiations between the English and Indian boards before the matter could reach a conclusion. If previous political stand-offs were anything to go by, the two boards were likely to present conflicting security reports, with the players caught very much in the middle.
One significant voice in support of the tour, however, is Michael Atherton, another former captain, who wrote in his Times column that he intended to travel for the series unless the Foreign Office advice changed in the meantime. "While it may seem inappropriate to say so right now, I hope the Test series in two weeks' time can still go ahead," he wrote. "One thing is for sure, however: since 9/11, much of the fun and spontaneity of watching sport has disappeared beneath an avalanche of security requirements. Sadly, sport, long regarded as a playground for those who want to abscond from the grim realities of daily life, is no longer immune."

A day after bad light forced an early end to the Kanpur ODI and handed India their third victory of the series, England captain Kevin Pietersen has raised concerns about the possibility of a similar problem in Guwahati, the venue for the sixth one-dayer on November 29.
"They [the authorities] will have to do something about Guwahati," Pietersen said. "We are going to start there at 8.30 am but that will still not make too much of a difference. It could get dark there by 3.30pm."
Guwahati is located in the north east and the sun sets earlier in the region than elsewhere in India. In Kanpur, the start of the third ODI was delayed by 45 minutes due to hazy conditions but only one over per innings was reduced. The light deteriorated rapidly during India's run-chase and the umpires offered it to the batsmen at the end of the 40th over. At that stage India needed 43 runs off 54 balls with five wickets in hand but were 16 runs ahead of the D/L equation.
"I think if we had a full game in Kanpur, we would have definitely taken it close," Pietersen said. "We put a lot of pressure on them and there was plenty of aggression from the bowlers."
However, Pietersen called on his batsmen to convert the starts they were getting into hundreds in order to stay competitive in the series. Pietersen's 63 in the first ODI in Rajkot is England's best individual performance in three matches. Bopara and Shah have also scored three half-centuries between them but they haven't been able to carry on.
"We have played in India for years now and there have only been a few centuries by England batsmen out here," Pietersen said. "We knew, coming to India, we needed to score hundreds to stay competitive and we have not got a hundred yet. Hopefully in the next four games we can try and get four."
England cannot afford another defeat in the seven-match series which India lead 3-0. The fourth ODI is in Bangalore on November 23 and it will be the series' first day-night contest.

Selection meeting leaks 'disgusting' - Dhoni
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has described as "disgusting and disrespectful" that matters which are discussed in selection meetings are leaked and reported in the media. India's selectors chose Irfan Pathan over for the next two ODIs against England over RP Singh and reports of a serious disagreement over selection cast a cloud over India's preparations for the fourth ODI against England in Bangalore.
"I don't know where the report came from. It cannot be a report because what happens inside a inside meeting when the selectors, the captain and the coaches are there, when it comes out it is disgusting and disrespectful," said Dhoni. "Things like this should not be happening. I'm not saying something happened at the meeting, but over the years we have seen things being leaked from meetings and things getting out.
The Kolkata-based Anandabazar Patrika reported on Saturday that Dhoni favoured the inclusion of RP Singh in the squad for the next two ODIs and offered to step down when the selectors insisted on replacing him with Irfan Pathan. The report said the board president, Shashank Manohar, had been informed of the argument.
BCCI officials have denied the report. "I don't talk about selection meetings. In any case it is all rubbish," N Srinivisan, the board secretary, told Cricinfo.
The report said the selectors raised with Srinivasan - present at the meeting, as convenor - the issue of a lack of respect shown to them by Dhoni. Srinivasan in turn informed Manohar. The board president, with a reputation of being a disciplinarian, is reported to have said unnecessary tantrums would not be tolerated and that no one was irreplaceable. The team, he reportedly said, cannot be picked on personal preferences.
"This is the pinnacle of the sport. We are selecting 15 guys for the Indian team," said Dhoni. "There will be debates inside and that information should not be put out in the media. If it is meant to come out, then I can say we might as well have the whole meeting telecast live on television. Nobody knows what was discussed except the eight guys in the meeting. And only they know whether its the truth or not."
Dhoni said he did not speak to the BCCI because he felt it was not important. In his view, matters of selection should be revealed by the BCCI, the chairman of selectors, one on of the individuals on the selection panel. "We have an important match coming up and we chose instead to focus on that match," he said. "This is a selection thing and personally I don't discuss anything outside. To some extent it does distract us. The good part is that we trust each other - every player in the team trusts each other."
Dhoni pledged his support to both concerned players, RP and Pathan, who he also said had faith in his abilities. "There might be a scenario where all of a sudden we might want to get in touch with RP Singh and Irfan Pathan. It should not be a case where RP feels he is not wanted and left out. Dhoni and Yusuf walk off the ground but Pietersen isn't pleased. He's talking to the umpires, the England players are hanging around ... Here's a rant from Ben: "Unbelievable, what an absolute farce. Why is there seemingly no room for common sense in todays game. 1) Why even attempt to play a match when you know the light will not be good enough all day? 2) What's the point of having flood lights if you can't use them for just this sort of occasion?"
It's official ... the game has been called off and India have won by 16 runs on the D-L method. Dhoni had talked about bad light coming into play at the toss, and it's turned out precisely that way. India have taken a 3-0 lead in the series.
"It is frustrating, it would have been nice to get a full game in today," Pietersen said. "We're getting better though, the games are getting closer. It'd be nice if one of our batters got in and scored a 100. "
"At the end of the day the umpire made decisions and unfortunately we came out bottom," Pietersen said when asked about the light.
"In the morning at the toss I said that D-L would come into play," Dhoni said. "It was bound to happen. I had the sheet in my pocket when I went to bat. We knew if we didn't lose wickets we would get ahead of the equation. the pitch was slower when we batted and the odd ball was turning ... but we had D-L in mind and we got of to a decent start and were always ahead of the equation."
Harbhajan Singh is the Man of the Match for his spell of 3 for 31.

Here's a rant from Ben: "Unbelievable, what an absolute farce. Why is there seemingly no room for common sense in todays game. 1) Why even attempt to play a match when you know the light will not be good enough all day? 2) What's the point of having flood lights if you can't use them for just this sort of occasion?"
It's official ... the game has been called off and India have won by 16 runs on the D-L method. Dhoni had talked about bad light coming into play at the toss, and it's turned out precisely that way. India have taken a 3-0 lead in the series.
"It is frustrating, it would have been nice to get a full game in today," Pietersen said. "We're getting better though, the games are getting closer. It'd be nice if one of our batters got in and scored a 100. "
"At the end of the day the umpire made decisions and unfortunately we came out bottom," Pietersen said when asked about the light.
"In the morning at the toss I said that D-L would come into play," Dhoni said. "It was bound to happen. I had the sheet in my pocket when I went to bat. We knew if we didn't lose wickets we would get ahead of the equation. the pitch was slower when we batted and the odd ball was turning ... but we had D-L in mind and we got of to a decent start and were always ahead of the equation."
Harbhajan Singh is the Man of the Match for his spell of 3 for 31.
