Live Test Cricket Match Sri Lanka V/S India
Match scheduled to begin at 10:00 local time (04:30 GMT)

Hello and a warm welcome to the first Test between India and Sri Lanka. While these sides have been playing each other every other day in coloured clothing, a Test series comes as welcome relief. The pre-match buzz has rightly focused on Muttiah Muralitharan's farewell, but India have a habit of gate-crashing these parties - as a certain Steve Waugh would remember, from 2004. Kumar Sangakkara and co. will do well to focus on the job at hand.
The visitors have had a very patchy lead-up to the game, with injuries to key bowlers, a sub-standard performance in the warm-up game and serious doubts over their ability to take 20 wickets - not the kind of problems one would associate with the world's no. 1 ranked Test side. If India are to hold on to that spot longer, they have a tough few days ahead. Despite winning a Test in each of their tours to Sri Lanka in the 2000s, they ended up losing both series 2-1. Can they pull one back this time? Toss in 10 minutes.
I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the first session, and my colleagues Kanishkaa Balachandran and Sid Ravindran will take over later in the day. Gopi Rangarajan is on scoring duties.

We are not down and out' - Rohit Sharma

IPL, IPL3 Rohit Sharma punches one through the off side, Deccan Chargers v Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2010, Nagpur, April 5, 2010

Rohit Sharma, the Deccan Chargers' middle-order batsman, believes that despite a five-match losing streak, his side are in with a chance to reach the semi-finals of the IPL.
"Yes, the boys are disappointed, but we are not down and out," Rohit told DNA in Bangalore, where Deccan plays their next match on Thursday. "No excuses for losing, but these things happen in Twenty20. We still have five games left. If we win even four of those, we can make it [to the semis], if our run-rate is healthy," Rohit said.
Rohit, whose selection to the Indian team for the World Twenty20 raised eyebrows, has justified his spot with a consistent run in the IPL, where he leads Deccan's run-charts with 258 runs. However, his performances have failed to inspire his team, which crashed to their sixth defeat of the tournament, against Rajasthan on Monday. Rohit was the last wicket to fall, caught in the outfield with three required from two balls, at the end of an abject collapse where seven wickets fell for 45 in six overs. "I don't want to prove anything to anyone. I don't want to take unnecessary pressure on myself. Whenever we have lost, we take it as the failure of the entire team. We don't blame or single out individuals when we lose a match," Rohit said.
While most IPL Teams play half their league games at home venues, political issues in Hyderabad have denied Deccan a homebase this year. Rohit singled this out as a major reason for their indifferent form. "That's the biggest disadvantage. We played Mumbai Indians at DY Patil [one of Deccan's designated 'home venues', in Mumbai] and not one spectator supported us. Sometimes the crowd factor plays a part. Your supporters give you that extra push in crunch matches," said Rohit.
The inability to stem the flow of runs in the end overs has been another problem area through the tournament, but Rohit acknowledged the marked improvement in the last game. "I know that's an issue. But on Monday, we gave away only 31 runs and picked up six wickets in the last five overs. Isn't that a positive," Rohit said.
Rohit praised his captain Adam Gilchrist for ensuring that his side did not get bogged down by failures. "He is a very supportive captain. He brings about a lot of positivity and tells us to forget about setbacks," Rohit said.

Sreesanth returns, Punjab choose to bat

In the first IPL match in Jaipur this season, Kumar Sangakkara chose to bat, like most captains have been doing in the tournament. Kings XI Punjab are coming off an impressive win, but are against a Rajasthan Royals side that has a formidable record at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Both teams made only one change to their line-ups: Australian batsman Adam Voges, who can chip in with some left-arm spin, takes the place of Morne Morkel in Rajasthan's XI because Shane Warne expects the track to assist the slower bowlers. Punjab have brought back temperamental fast bowler Sreesanth in place of left-arm quick Shalabh Srivastava. Rusty Theron retains his spot ahead of the out-of-form Brett Lee.
Rajasthan Royals: Naman Ojha (wk), Michael Lumb, Faiz Fazal, Shane Watson, Yusuf Pathan, Adam Voges, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Abhishek Raut, Shane Warne (capt), Aditya Dole, Siddharth Trivedi
Kings XI Punjab: Mahela Jayawardene, Manvinder Bisla, Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), Yuvraj Singh, Ravi Bopara, Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, Rusty Theron, Ramesh Powar, Sreesanth, Bipul Sharma

India v South Africa 2009/10, Sachin, I'd like to bat another full 50 overs - Tendulkar

MS Dhoni is happy as Sachin Tendulkar reaches 200 in the last
over, 2nd ODI, Gwalior, February 24, 2010

Sachin Tendulkar, who broke the record for the highest individual ODI score, overtaking Saeed Anwar and Charles Coventry on his way to the format's first double-hundred, has said his ability to bat the entire 50 overs was a testament to his fitness after having played the game for more than 20 years.
"It feels good that I lasted for 50 overs, a good test of my fitness. I'd like to bat another 50 overs at some stage and see that the fitness level doesn't drop," Tendulkar said after his effort helped India take a unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. "The ball was coming onto the bat and I was striking the ball well. So when everything falls into its place, it feels nice. It was one of the innings where I felt I was moving well. Since I was timing the ball well, I could be more aggressive and put pressure on the bowlers."
Tendulkar, while dedicating his feat to the people of India, credited coach Gary Kirsten for the team's success in both forms of the game after the debacle in the World Cup in the Caribbean. "I've enjoyed various challenges; after the 2007 World Cup things have looked different and I'm enjoying the game," he said. "The credit also goes to Gary [Kirsten], he has really held the team beautifully. It's about togetherness and playing for each other. You see during the practice sessions that Gary himself trains as hard as anyone else, or probably harder than anyone else as he's the one giving us practice all the time."
Tendulkar said he sensed an opportunity to break the record and reach a double-century when he had gone past 175 in the 42nd over. The record eventually came in the 46th over, and the 200 in the 50th. "When I was near 175-180, I thought I could get a 200 as there were quite a few overs left," he said. He added that he would prefer his achievement to be upstaged by an Indian. "I don't play for records, I play for enjoyment and play with lots of passion. That's how cricket started. I didn't start playing cricket to break all the records; it's happened along the way. The dream was to play for India and do my best.
"I don't think any record is unbreakable. Records are made to be broken. I hope that if this record is broke, it's done by an Indian."
This was India's third-highest score in ODIs, and Tendulkar said the 400-mark would not have reached if not for some big hitting by Yusuf Pathan and MS Dhoni. "I thought a target of 340-350 would be a good one, but Yusuf Pathan and MS Dhoni came in and hit the big shots and cleared the ropes consistently and helped us pass 400."
Tendulkar added that India were not relaxing despite having put up a mammoth score, for they were aware South Africa were the only team to have chased down a target in excess of 400. "This was the team that chased 434 against Australia. So we didn't get complacent and told ourselves that we had just got through the half-way stage by scoring 401. And what we did in the second half was extremely important. We were aiming at getting early wickets and putting them out of the game."
Dhoni, who witnessed Tendulkar surpass the record from the other end, said: "I think one of the best innings, you can say. It's always good to be on the other side, watching him score 200 runs. When he is tired and can't play the big shots, he was very clever to use the pace of the bowler and it's very difficult for the bowlers as they don't know where exactly to bowl."
India lost Virender Sehwag early, and Tendulkar was assisted in three sizable stands where runs came at a brisk pace, with Dinesh Karthik, Yusuf and Dhoni. "Once Viru got out, it was important to get some kind of a partnership going. They [Tendulkar and Karthik] went on with their innings, and they set a platform after which we were sure we would get 350-plus which would be a difficult target," Dhoni said. "Yusuf was sent up the order and with the talent he's got, he can be a great asset to the side."
Yusuf scored a quickfire 36 and was particularly lethal during the batting Powerplay, while Dhoni proved destructive at the death, bludgeoning 68 off 35 in a century-stand with Tendulkar in just 53 balls. "I have changed my batting a bit, but the situation demanded that kind [attacking] of innings," Dhoni said. "The ground is a small one, and we were a bit worried about the dew factor. But once they lost 3-4 early wickets, it was difficult for them to get back into the game."
For South Africa and their stand-in captain Jacques Kallis, it was a case of the basics gone wrong. "The toss was quite vital. Our basics were just weren't good enough today. We were outplayed," Kallis said. "We lost wickets at crucial stages, our basics let us down. A fantastic innings by Sachin; he took advantage of some good conditions and he played superbly. We let ourselves down in some areas."

Profile

There are so many things that Sachin Tendulkar is to so many people, that it is sometimes forgotten that he is first and foremost a batsman of unparalleled ability, dedication and mind. If he had taken to some other sport in early childhood, his persona would have been invented -- by coaches who want to teach their wards the virtues a tight technique that allows attacking shots, by film-makers who want to create celluloid fantasy by depicting the perfect batsman and superstar, by marketing men who want to appeal to the broadest strata of public imaginable and by cricket fanatics who want to see batting perfection embodied in one person.

Tendulkar has been in the spotlight since before he made his international debut, and has conducted himself in exemplary fashion, even though he has been India's biggest news-worthy item for two decades. His debut in 1989 was a fiery introduction to international cricket, when as a 16 year old he had to face up to the might of Wasim Akram, Imran Khan and Waqar Younis in their backyard.

Since then he has gone on to amass records by the dozens, a few of which are unlikely to be surpassed during his lifetime. He has the most number of runs in Test matches as well as One Day Internationals, and the most number of centuries in both forms as well. His tally of more than 30,000 international runs is not likely to be overtaken by anyone, as is his list of international centuries. He has 88 international centuries so far, and looks set to become the only man in history to get to 100 international centuries.

More than numbers though, it is what Tendulkar brings to the arena everytime he sets foot on the field that touches fans, cutting across boundaries and nationalities. He has been hailed by Sir Donald Bradman as the man most resembling the Don in batting style, and he has lived up to that by scoring runs consistently against all comers and on all surfaces for a time-frame and a number of matches that has been unmatched by anyone in the history of cricket.

Tendulkar has also been the single biggest factor behind the explosion of popularity that cricket enjoys in India which led to the Indian board becoming the richest and most powerful in world cricket. In a country already predisposed to cricket, Tendulkar gave the people a hero they could look upto regardless of age, colour, creed or sect -- and catapulted cricket from a sport to a religion in the subcontinent.

And in the cricketing religion, Tendulkar rules as the presiding deity.

India 356/3 (46.0 ov) South Africa India - Live Cricket Update, Live Cricket Score Live Cricket More

After losing the toss the South Africans were chasing leather as the Indians looked set to score well in excess of the 298 they managed in the first ODI in Jaipur. The early loss of Virender Sehwag didn't hurt the home side at all as Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik brought up brisk half-centuries on a road of a pitch with an array of elegant strokes to keep the crowd entertained.
The margin for error was very little on a pitch where the ball was coming on to the bat very easily. Tendulkar and Karthik had the freedom to drive through the line and each time they pierced the gaps, there was a minimum of two runs for the taking. The racy, yet bumpy outfield only made things tougher for the fielding side.
Only an error on the part of the batsman could have yielded a wicket, and that's what happened to Sehwag. Aiming to hit Wayne Parnell down the ground, he took his bottom hand off the bat at the point of contact, and Dale Steyn took the catch above his head at third man.
Tendulkar was in his element, flicking off his pads and driving neatly through the off side using the pace of the ball. He began by squirting out a half-volley from Parnell through the covers before flicking the next one off his pads past midwicket. Steyn tried to bowl it a bit shorter but Tendulkar responded by pulling him over midwicket and slashing over point. Even the introduction of spin didn't help as Tendulkar gently tucked Roelof van der Merwe off his pads past short fine leg to bring up his fifty, off just 37 balls.
Seeing that there was no movement off the seam, Jacques Kallis took off a slip and placed a short cover. Pretty soon, he abandoned the idea of having a slip, placing him at short midwicket, hoping for one of them to chip in the air off the drive. He then placed a sweeper cover, which was more of a defensive ploy. But it didn't yield immediate results.
Karthik too made merry with shots on both sides of the wicket. Like Tendulkar, he began with consecutive fours off Parnell and kept rotating the strike. His fifty - off 59 balls - wasn't as quick as Tendulkar's but their partnership set up a perfect platform for India.

Why is Harbhajan Singh struggling?

Why is Harbhajan Singh struggling?

NEW DELHI: Bowlers win matches is an old cricketing adage. This is even more true for Test matches. While India's rise to No.1 in Test rankings
Harbhajan
Day in Pics: February 10

was mainly facilitated by a formidable batting line-up, the bowlers too played a key role there.

Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan led the bowling cast with distinction over the last decade. However, after Kumble retired in 2008, the burden had to be primarily shared by Zaheer and Harbhajan with active support from the likes of Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra.

Zaheer has been manfully carrying on although he is not getting any younger. In Harbhajan's case, though, an impression has gained ground that, lately, he has been losing his efficacy as a matchwinner, something which doesn't augur well for India because there aren't many strike bowlers available. The shattering defeat to South Africa in the Nagpur Test has once again brought into focus the performance on India's premier spinner.

Has he really lost his bite or has he been sorted out by international batsmen? Is he also a case of burn-out with too much cricket? Has he lost sting after Kumble's retirement because the two often hunted as a pair?

Spin great Bishen Singh Bedi, as well as Maninder Singh, former India tweaker, felt that Harbhajan has been unable to early wickets, important for a strike bowler. However, Kumble, Harbhajan's 'partner-in-crime' for many years, came to his defence, saying, "You can't expect Harbhajan to take five wickets in every innings. But I am confident that if he gets some early wickets, he will be a different bowler. It's only a matter of confidence. Everyone goes through a difficult phase and but you need to be patient at this level. Kolkata has been a favourite ground for Harbhajan and I am confident he is going to get back to his old way of picking wickets," Kumble said.

Kolkata's Eden Gardens will host the second Test against South Africa from Feb 14, a game India must win to retain their No. 1 ranking.

The former Indian captain also dismissed the argument that now that he has retired, the offie was getting exposed. "He is a class bowler. He is experienced."

Stats show that Harbhajan's performance has suffered a bit in Kumble's absence. In the 11 Tests after Kumble's retirement, Harbhajan has taken 48 wickets at an average of 33.37. But the worrying fact is that he has only one five-wicket haul in this period, the true yardstick of a matchwinning bowler. In comparison, when Harbhajan used to bowl in tandem with Kumble, he had 22 five-wicket hauls in 71 Tests.

"I think it's about the mindset. He wants to restrict the other side from scoring. He is waiting for the wickets to come by. He is hesitant to put pressure on the opposition. He has the class but he has to apply pressure on the minds of the batsmen. An attacking field is the best way to make the batsmen think differently, which he is not doing too often," Maninder said.

Bedi, meanwhile, blamed Twenty20 cricket for the 'declining quality' of Indian spinners. "T20 is affecting cricket very badly. The bowlers try to bowl dot balls which is bad for the game. Harbhajan often has a sweeper cover and a deep mid-wicket when he's bowling. That is because he knows if he's bowling badly and the fielders are there to save those boundaries. By doing this, you are blocking two fielders," Bedi added.

Great off-spinner Erapalli Prasanna agreed that all was not well with Harbhajan's bowling. "I will tell Harbhajan what is wrong with his bowling when he talks to me. I don't want to discuss this issue with the media," Prasanna said.

Bedi questioned: "Why do you need to bowl round the stump on a turning pitch? You can vary your line according to the need of the situation, but good length is mandatory and Harbhajan has to understand it. Clearly, there is a lack of imagination in the bowling. He looks jaded and his body language doesn't inspire the team. To be successful, you have to outwit the batsmen."

Maninder felt that Harbhajan was not using the crease well. "You can make out from his footmarks that Harbhanjan bowls from one spot without using the depth of the crease. On a good pitch, he has to vary his line and length to take wickets. On a turning track or underprepared pitch, he will get wickets. However, on good pitches, he will struggle."

What also might be working against Harbhajan is that there is no one in the country to challenge him for the India slot. Thus, Harbhajan needs to challenge, and better himself. India need him to do that.

Champions League T20 dates put English counties in fix

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has asked the organisers of Champions League Twenty20 to rework the event's schedule as a clash

Champions League T20

of dates with the domestic season could prevent the counties from playing in the cash-awash tournament.

Champions League chairman Lalit Modi on Wednesday revealed that the event would be held from September 10 to 26 on his twitter page. Last season, the tournament was held in October, featuring teams from India, Australia, South Africa, England and the Caribbean.

This year, the dates coincide with the final two rounds of the English County Championship, the semi-finals and final of the Pro40 League and the ODI Series between England and Pakistan.

The ECB has decided to take up the matter with Modi. "The ECB has expressed concern to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa over scheduling of the 2010 Champions League Twenty20," the ECB said in a statement.

"Due to the scheduling of the India vs Australia One-day series, the ECB understands that the Champions League governing council has today determined that the 2010 dates for the Champions League should be September 10-26," the statement read.

"The governing council is aware that this proposed scheduling coincides with the final two rounds of the County Championship, the semi-finals and final of the ECB 40 League and the NatWest Series between England and Pakistan," it added.

The ECB said it would be a "shame" if English teams are unable to participate because of a clash of dates.

"The ECB has expressed serious concern to the BCCI, CA and CSA concerning this decision and the matter will be discussed with the respective chairmen and presidents who are currently meeting in Dubai.

"The ECB believes that it would be a great shame for the Champions League to be deprived of teams and players by this change of date, in bringing forward the respective events by a week, and has called on the BCCI to review all alternatives," it said.

Counties, on their part, left it on the ECB to handle the issue but conceded that they have been left surprised by the change of dates.

"We all expected the competition to start in the third or fourth week of September. We have to leave it to the ECB to have the appropriate talks," Sussex chief executive Dave Brooks was quoted as saying by 'The Times'.

Somerset, who also played in the inaugural CL T20, echoed the view. "My response is slight bemusement as the English season was brought forward to avoid a clash of dates. I hope that Mr Modi will see that it would be a retrograde step for the competition if English teams were not involved," said CEO Richard Gould.
